Animals Who Can Really Use Language

As humans, we tend to think we have a monopoly on all of these things in communication. We’re really good at it – at least we think we are. We certainly do a lot. But other species also have the ability to use language? In nature, animals certainly communicate with each other, such as vervet monkeys have different calls for warnings about snakes, eagles, baboons and lions. Different calls mean monkeys can respond appropriately to the attack – take cover an eagle attack, to find higher ground for a snake attack. But is it the language? Do animals have semantics, grammar, subtle nuances? Linguists have tried to answer this question throughout the twentieth century, and came up with some interesting experiences. Discover who taught human language in our Top 10 animals that have learned to use the language.
